Easy Vegetable Dumplings |Vegan dumplings

Vegetable dumplings, they are known as Gyoza in Japan. Dumplings are one of my absolute favourite side dishes. My family adore Japanese and Chinese cuisine very much like Sushi, Chicken momos, potstickers so on... and I cherish with spicy chilli sauce and soy sauce. It is the best party food ever and is actually fun to make as well in different shapes. The tricky part of making dumplings is to assemble and make a proper shape. When I first made the dumplings, I had a problem with shaping them the most, but with a little practice and tricks, you will make it.

Here is your new go-to recipe for easy vegetable dumplings with a delicious veggie filling. It is way easier than it looks!

Homemade Vegetable Dumplings Recipe

Ingredients

For dough:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • pinch of Kosher salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 glass hot water
For filling :

  • 1 cup cabbage ( finely chopped)
  • 1-inch ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, peeled & grated
  • 1 onion ( finely chopped)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped spring onions
  • 4-5 crushed black peppercorns
  • 1 tbsp reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • Salt to taste ( careful with salt don't add too much because the filling has soy-sauce which is salty)

DIRECTIONS

For the filling

  • Firstly, wash the vegetables under tap water.
  • In a food processor, add all the vegetables and grind until finely chopped.
  • Add in salt, pepper, spring onions, sesame oil and soy sauce. Mix well.
  • The filling is ready.
TIP: If you have a food processor, I highly recommend it because it saves a lot of time and effort.

For the dough

  • In a mixing bowl, add in all-purpose flour (maida), Kosher salt, baking powder, and 1 glass hot water.
  • Knead a stiff dough with the help of lukewarm water ( just like a dough of Bhatura's).
  • Keep it aside for about 20 minutes. Covered with a wet cloth, so that dough doesn't dry out.
  • Divide the dough into small portions shape them into small balls and roll them into a thin disc. ( roll as thin as possible it should be transparent). As shown in the pictures below:

Assembling dumplings

  • To assemble the dumplings, place the round disc onto your left palm. Take a spoonful of filling and place it in a center of the disc.
  • With the help of your fingertip apply little water on the edges of the round disc.
  • Fold the dough, make plates and pinching the edges inward to seal.
  • Repeat the process to used up all the remaining filling and dough.
  • In an idli-steamer or bamboo steamer, I'm using Idli steamer so in a steamer add in 2 cups of water and keep on the medium flame for boiling, place the plate place parchment paper below and arrange the dumplings on the steamer and apply a little amount of coconut oil to make them shiny.
  • Cover the lid and steam for about 15-20 minutes or till the momos steamed well.
  • If you want to pan-fry dumplings for a few seconds you can do. (It's optional)
  • Serve hot with chilli sauce or soy sauce of your choice.

NOTES:
  • To make dumplings wraps are easy but if you want to save your time and effort in rolling, you can buy ready-made round wonton wraps from the Asian store.
  • If the filling of dumplings left, use it in making Oat pancakes, Idli, dosa filling, stuffed parathas.
  • Customize accordingly if you are allergic to flour use wheat flour any flour of your choice.
  • Use a food processor, it saves a lot of time.
