Chicken Momos
MOMOS/ Steamed dumplings
Momo/dumpling is a type of Tibetan dumpling that is made up of plain flour, water and is filled with juicy minced chicken or choice of your favorite vegetable filling.
These gorgeous dumplings served along with spicy tomato garlic chili sauce. Indeed, Mouth-watering!
It is the most popular street food found in Tibet, Sikkim, and Darjeeling. Nowadays, it's a trendy appetizer everywhere in the world and is a great hit among the youngsters, munching on it can never GET BORING!
There are varieties of momos veg, non-veg also some sweet flavors and can be prepared with different methods:
- Frying
- Pany-fry
- Tandoori
- Steaming.
My personal favorite is the traditional method i.e. steaming. Steaming is a far healthier option as compared to various conventional methods of cooking.
Since I moved to France our eating habits have changed a lot. I've started liking poultry, seafood and other exotic stuff in Europe. For instance, one of my favorite 'Japanese restaurants' close to my place 'Royal Tokyo' where I always order two plates of Gyozas which is similar to dumplings with a filling of shrimps and is served with delicious soy sauce and hot chili sriracha sauce (sauce piment).
Let's see how easy it is to prepare delicious Chicken momos:
What we need to make perfect Momos?

For dough:

- pinch of salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
For filling :

- 1 tsp fresh garlic paste
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup finely chopped spring onions

Chicken filling |
For the filling
- Firstly, wash the chicken in tap water and pat it dry with the help of a paper towel.
- In a mixer, blender grinds the chicken filet to form a thick paste. (You can also use the boiled chicken and minced it nicely if you want to get rid of chicken smell while grinding).
- Add in salt, pepper, spring onions, ginger-garlic paste, and soy sauce. Mix well.
- The filling is ready.
For the dough
- In a mixing bowl, add in all-purpose flour (maida), salt, baking powder, and vegetable oil.
- Knead a stiff dough with the help of lukewarm water ( just like a dough of Bhatura's).
- Keep it aside for about 20 minutes. Covered with a wet cloth, so that dough doesn't dry out.
- Divide the dough into small portions( just like we make pooris) shape them into small balls and roll them into a thin disc. ( roll as thin as possible it should be transparent). As shown in the pictures below:
- Take a spoonful of chicken filling and place it in a center of the disc.
- With the help of your fingers, apply little water on its edges.
- Bring the edges together to cover the filling, makes plates to make them fancy and seal the momos.
- Repeat the process to used up all the remaining filling and dough.
- In an idli-steamer or bamboo steamer, I'm using Idli steamer so in a steamer add in 2 cups of water and keep on the medium flame for boiling, arrange the momos on the steamer and apply a little amount of coconut oil to make them shiny.
- Cover the lid and steam for about 15-20 minutes or till the momos steamed well.
- Serve hot with chili sauce or any dip of your choice.
